The administration of nitrous oxide is a new, friendly and safe method of combating stress and pain associated with a visit to the dentist.
Due to inhalation sedation, the patients suffering from stress before the visit to the dentist, feeling the panic that prevents dental treatment, will completely get rid of these unpleasant feeling. This method allows for ensuring and achieving full psychological comfort andmanagement of pain.
Laughing gas is a mixture of nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen (O2), which induces a state of physical relaxation and pleasant peace, while maintaining full consciousness of the patient. Sedation is obtained by inhalation of the odorless gas with oxygen using the fragrance masks worn over the nose, in the available scents, such as strawberry, orange, raspberry, vanilla or bubble gum. The patient does not feel either fear or anxiety. Often, especially children and young people fall asleep dreaming of fabulous adventures related to swimming, flying or drifting in the water, in the air, in the clouds, or in space. A patient who falls asleep during the procedure does not remember its course.
The laughing gas has been used in medicine and in dentistry for a long time. This method has been developed and refined in the United States and is very popular there. It is practically hard to find a dental practice in the US, which does not apply this method. In Poland, metod only appeared in 1995, and becoming very popular.
The use of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is harmless and effective way to endure anxiety, especially recommended for children. The method is also indicated for adults who experience intense fear of dental treatment or of injection (anesthesia). Laughing gas, in addition to a clear improvement in well-being, also exhibits analgesic activity, thus dental filling or scaling can be performed without an injection, during the operation of laughing gas.
Laughing gas stops working few minutes after turning off the device.
Most of the children who benefited from inhalation sedation are not afraid to have subsequent visits to the dentist and come back eagerly for another visit.
Indications for use of inhalation sedation with N2O / O2.
- Strong fear of any treatment;
- Strong fear of needle-stick injury in both children and adults;
- A strong emetic reflex;
- Nervous hyperactivity;
- Long, monotonous or particularly unpleasant surgical, prosthetic procedures, impressions of the jaw in patients with a strong emetic reflex;
- Removal of plague;
- Opening of tooth with gangrenous pulp decay;
- Management of initial caries;
- Asthma - N2O does not cause respiratory irritation. Decreasing the stress reduces the risk of attack. In the inhalation mixture given to the patient there is approx. 60% oxygen. This improves the efficiency of breathing and well-being of the patient;
- Epilepsy – decreasing the stress reduces the risk of attack;
- Heart disease - the lack of a clear effect of N2O on the cardiovascular system. The patient receives an increased oxygen concentration (approx. 60%). Indications of pulse oximeter show that approx. 100% more oxygen reaches the coronary arteries. Furthermore, there is no increased oxygen demand due to the absence of stress.
- Hypertension - No effect of N2O on the vascular system. Reduction of anxiety and stress prevents unexpected increase in blood pressure during procedure;
- Hemophilia – thanks to the use of N2O needle puncture can be avoided in some cases.
- Contraindications of sedation with N2O / O2.
- Cammon cold, hypertrophy of pharyngeal tonsil - upper airway obstructions;
- I trimester of pregnancy;
- Mental disorders;
- Multiple sclerosis, porphyria, myasthenia gravis;
- Bronchiectasis, emphysema;
- Lack of patient cooperation.
